Piano strings are under very high tension and even if the piano is never played the strings will stretch and the sound will be flat. A new piano will have a breaking-in period that lasts about a year, which will require a tune up every three months or so. After the first year, the piano should be tuned every six months in normal conditions. If the piano is located in a humid or very dry place, the six months will vary. If you have someone in your household who has a very discriminating ear, your piano may have to be tuned more often than that.

A digital piano, on the other hand, never needs to be tuned up. It weighs a fraction of what acoustic pianos weigh, which makes them very easy to move around. When there are many students learning to play the piano, digital pianos with headphone jacks enable the students to hear what they are playing with no interference from the other students. This type of piano can cost considerably less than an acoustic, but there are some digital pianos that can cost as much as a grand piano.

Being able to connect to the Internet is a great advantage that the digital piano offers. For composers, connecting to the Internet allows them to input all kinds of musical data into the computer as they write. There are hundreds of other sounds and instruments that are incorporated into the digital piano system. When you want to play the music from a popular musical score, you can download it into the digital piano and it will show you what notes to play. Once you get the keys and symbols figured out, you will feel like a real pianist.  The biggest disadvantage to a digital piano, no matter how good technology gets, is that it will always be just an imitation of the acoustic piano sound.
